A Protest by the Cyprus Turkish Electricity Authority Employees Union (El-Sen) against the Public Procurement (Amendment) Bill, which will be discussed at the General Assembly of Parliament today, is continuing. Activists marching in front of the parliament carried banners and placards reading “No to AKSA”.
Head of EL-SEN Çağlayan Cesurer and Secretary General Ahmet Tuğcu sat on the parliament garden gate and activists kicked at the gate. Activists who then came face to face with the police smashed down the gate and entered the parliament garden.
While the police took widespread security measures and set up a barrier in front of the Parliament, the roads between Dereboyu and the parliament building and Ledra Palace and the Parliament were closed to traffic. The flow of traffic on the Girne Kapısı-parliament road was decreased to two lanes for a short while.
Meanwhile, in support of the action carried out by EL-SEN, the Turkish Cypriot Public Servants Union (KTAMS) also held a strike today at the Vehicle Registration and Road Tax Department in Lefkoşa between 8 am and 4.15 pm.
