A protest was held at the Mara Monte Beach yesterday by Lapta(Lapithos)-Alsancak(Karavas)-Çamlıbel (Myrtou) Municipality with a slogan the ‘Mare Monte belongs to the public.’
The protest was supported by many people yesterday.
Lapta(Lapithos)-Alsancak(Karavas)-Çamlıbel (Myrtou) Municipality Mayor Fırat Ataser made speech during the protest saying that “Mare Monte is the property of public and will remain so”.
Ataser reminded that the entire Mare Monte Beach was rented by the government in 2009 for 49 years.
Ataser stated that as a municipality, they are not against investments, but they will not allow the Mare Monte Beach, which is a property of the public to be taken away.
He reminded that the legal struggle began in 2018 and was completed in 2020 with a decision of the Supreme Administrative Court to transfer the beach to the public.
Ataser explained that he learned the news of the Mare Monte Beach being rented from the Official Gazette.
Expressing that the Mare Monte beach and the queen pools area were removed from the lease agreement with the legal struggle they started, Ataser said that they do not want to go through the same problem with every changing government.
For this reason, Ataser emphasized that they want the plots of the Mare Monte Beach and queen pools to be transferred to the municipality with an official contract and with a decision of the Council of Ministers.
