The Employees Union of the Cyprus Turkish Electricity Authority (El-Sen) is protesting in front of the Parliamentary building against the draft of the (amendment) Public Procurement bill which is still being discussed at the General Assembly.
Extra security measures were taken by the police in the region due to the action and barriers were put up in front of the Parliament building just before the protest began. The route between Dereboyu and Ledra Palace has been closed to traffic.
Protesters pushed and kicked the parliament gateway by forcing through barriers set up by police leading to a traffic jam from the Kyrenia Gate (Girne Kapısı) towards the Parliament.
Head of Türk-Sen Arslan Bıçaklı, said that the institution is the property of the public and that they will continue to protect it.
Secretary General of (EL-SEN) Ahmet Tuğcu also referred to today’s power cuts and said, “The Police have been waiting here for 3 days. We are also here. Dear head we would like to know who is interfering with the system?”
