Derya called for women living in Cyprus to organize a joint congress to contribute in writing towards a comprehensive solution


The head of the Republican Turkish Party (CTP) Women’s Branch Doğuş Derya called for women living in Cyprus to organize a joint congress to contribute in writing towards a comprehensive solution on issues that have been ignored in the negotiation chapters.

Derya spoke at a panel held at the European Parliament.
Moderated by the Member of the European Parliament (EP) Prof. Niyazi Kızılyürek, Irish EP MP Clare Daly, member of the Technical Committee on Gender Equality Maria Hadjipavlou and General Secretary of the Pancyprian Federation of Women’s Organisations (POGO) Skevi Koukouma made statements.

During the discussions, in addition to the peace activism carried out by women in conflict zones, issues on how peace negotiations were managed during the effects of war and conflicts on women were taken up.

Giving examples from the feminist international relations literature, Derya said that the concepts of peace and security are handled through state and military power.
Derya emphasized the necessity of a human-oriented security approach instead of a State-oriented security approach.

Referring to the chapters covered during the Cyprus negotiation process, Derya gave examples of the experiences and effects of the needs of women and vulnerable groups that were disregarded.

Speaking of the structural violent relations that Turkish Cypriots are exposed to, Derya called for women living in Cyprus to organize a joint congress to contribute in writing towards a comprehensive solution on issues that have been ignored in the negotiation chapters.
